Donald Trump Stops Short of Iran Strike in Record State of the Union
In his record-breaking State of the Union address on February 24, 2026, President Donald Trump did not make any official announcement about military strikes against Iran despite the largest military buildup in the Middle East since 2003. While President Trump was focusing on the issue of the nuclear 'red line' and claimed that the death toll of Iranian protesters had risen to 32,000 despite the fact that this figure was denounced by Tehran as a 'big lie',he also seemed to favor an agreement over military strikes against Iran. The spotlight is now on high-stakes negotiations in Geneva between envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, in which Iran is reportedly offering to dilute its highly enriched uranium in return for sanctions relief. However, with the USS Gerald R. Ford already deployed in the region and tensions at an all-time high, failure to agree on an acceptable text this week could see President Trump launch military strikes against Iran.
